One Man’s Fight for the Truth about the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
When I was just a little kid, I heard my maternal side of the family talking about the horror of Jallianwala Bagh. Though I understood little of their discussion or of the depth of the pain and scar it left on the minds of Indians, but to my little mind, that discussion was nothing less of a Horror movie. Till this day, I shudder at the mere mention of the Massacre that happened exactly 100 years ago.
On that tragic day of 13th April 1919, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered troops to open fire without warning on a peaceful crowd of thousands of unarmed civilians, gathered for peaceful protest in an enclosed public square in Jallianwala Baugh, killing at least 500, including children. Over 1,000 were injured. What’s more, the British Army on orders of Dyer, kept on shooting until they had only enough ammunition left to defend themselves on their way back to base.
The case, O’Dwyer versus Nair, which followed before the King’s Bench in London caused a buzz in the entire world. It was a sharp zing, that opened the eyes of the world at large, against the atrocities that were committed in India by the Britishers.
However, the case was decided against the defendant Nair, by Judge McCardie, who overshadowed the jury with his biased views.
Authors Raghu and Pushpa through a thorough reconstruction of the events that led to Jallainwala Baugh massacre and afterward the well-known ‘O’Dawyer versus Nair case’ gives us thought-provoking, detailed and exhaustively researched book.
‘The Case that Shook the Empire’ proved to be an eye-opener.
The narratives of the book were so real and explosive that I found myself simmering in hot anger. I was rendered speechless at the atrocities and injustice meted out to us by the Britishers.
Nothing makes me happier than to recommend a book which is worth every penny you spend. I loved this book!
‘The Case that Shook the Empire’, is one of my top 10 books of 2019, not to mention THE MOST ENGROSSING read.
Written in a very simple language, this is one of those books that will hook you from the first page and keep you engaged till the end.
It’s a 5 out of 5 stars read for me.
Happy Reading 🙂
