I liked reading “The 100 Year old man who climbed out of the window” for the same reason I like out and out Indian movies, where hero can fight a dozen men without getting hurt or can do triple somersault even though he is not a gymnast or people can sing songs, or know how to dance or wake up flawless.

It’s an absurd story but the simplicity of the narrative makes it so matter-of-fact that one believes that it can happen after all life is nothing but a strange amalgamation of coincidences. The story begins when a 100 year old man, Allan Karlsson,(who was once an explosive expert) decides to climb out of the window of his nursing home, in his pee slippers, on his hundredth birthday and sets out on a journey that begins with stealing a suitcase that has 50 million dollars, which belongs to a drug mafia. He then kills two of the drug king’s henchmen, who later on forgive Allan and all his friends that Allan has made on his journey since the suitcase happened.
In the end, they all live happily ever after, and hundred-year-old Allan even gets married to an eighty-five-year-old Amanda. The book also talks in parallel about Allan’s previous life where he happened to meet, dine and become friends with almost all the world leaders from Stalin in Russia, to Mao in China, to Truman in America, to Kim Jong in North Korea, influencing the world events that changed the course of twentieth-century history.
So, it’s a funny book, but towards the end, the novel becomes a bit tedious. Had it been 70-80 pages shorter, I would have enjoyed it more.
