That Thing About You
Abhaidev’s book ‘That Thing About You’ pleasantly surprised me. When I first glanced at the title and the cover of the book, I thought it to be a full-on Romance book. Alas! How wrong was I in my perception!!! This book turned out to be an engrossing soul searching journey for me, who all her life has tried to shun the Self-Helps and Spiritual genre.
The story revolves around the main character Subodh, who is an IT professional in Mumbai. He is cynical, considered a tad bit immature by the people who know him and tries to shirk away from his responsibilities.
Life gets more complicated for Subodh when he overhears Sneha’s – she is the girl, he is in love with- feelings about him. He is heartbroken, shattered and thoroughly depressed.
His life takes a turn when he bought a key while on an office trip. Quite mysteriously he finds himself talking to an invisible girl, who incidentally knows everything about Subodh; even the deepest, darkest secrets in the deep recesses of his mind.
The question is what happens to Subodh in his spiritual journey with this unknown entity afterward? Is it all in his head? To know the answers, you need to read the book.
I really loved the concept of the story. And the language and the narrations were simple, crisp and uncomplicated. But I felt throughout the book that something was missing. The plot kind of left bland taste in my mouth, a few more masalas would have made the book a lot more interesting… It felt like I was reading 240 pages in slow-motion. ‘Excitement’ was the keyword that was missing in the entire book. Furthermore, there were repeated conversations that rendered the meaning of the messages redundant.
About the Characters
There are only 2-3 characters to talk about in this book, however, the strength of these characters more than compensates for the amount.
I fell in love with the character of Subodh. His naivety and honest to the world approach makes you fall for him. It was moreover on a realistic term rather than in a fantasy world.
This book ‘That Thing about you’ gave me a lot to fathom about life in general and people’s perception towards their daily petty struggles.
I would definitely recommend this book to the readers as a one time read.
It’s a 3 out of 5 stars read for me.
